Netting Fish Properly

Netting Fish Properly

Netting a fish is like anything else, it requires a little practice and knowledge to get it right. One of the most important things to remember is not to rush it. Take your time and make sure the fish is slowing down.  Here are a few of the key things to remember.

  1. Make a plan, look for places that are free of obstacles, fast currents or other hazards to avoid losing the fish. Talk it over with your fishing partner to try to land the fish in that area.
  2. Don't Rush It!
  3. Net the fish head first. If a fish has a last minute burst of energy it should head right into the net. Trying to net a fish from the tail will often spook it, spending it on a last ditch effort to avoid the net and can result in a broken tippet.
  4. Lift the Head. As the fish come to toward the net lift your rod to coax the fish to the surface, it will make scooping the fish into the net much easier.

If you follow these simply steps you are going to put a lot more fish in the net.
